Britannia Hospital concludes the Mick Travis trilogy (If…, O Lucky Man!), though here the character Mick Travis is just one admittedly important element of a multi-perspective plot. Lindsay Anderson's film narrates the story of a single day. Though this is no normal day in the hospital: the Queen herself is arriving to open a new wing, the hospital staff are striking and outside the gates - at least initially - left-wing protesters are demonstrating. In the meantime, Professor Millar, who we met in O Lucky Man!, is preparing to make an announcement to the world... Madness.
Madness, but with some kind of order to it. And sometimes you will feel like this deadly satire is aimed at the second half of the 2010s - overwhelming populist speeches, hollow statements about the state of the world simply plucked from the air, social justice and inequality, a community pulled apart by individual interests... And Professor Millar, the star scientist, also feels rather familiar, not a world away from Dr Frankenstein. Millar is a noble harbinger of scientific and technological progress, who acts first and fails to consider what his creation may mean for the world. In other words, Britannia Hospital is somewhat ill. And at times more reminiscent of a mental institution. Or not even that. Because amid the middle of the preparations for the royal visit, the production of appearances, the rebellion of the mob who see themselves as the working class, and the prying eyes of the media, somehow in this hospital everyone forgets to take care of the patients. So much for the chances of a recovery.
