The Angola-born, Portugal-based artist rose to international prominence in the early 1970s with his distinctive semba style, blending Portuguese fado, Cape Verdean morna and coladeira alongside Afro-Cuban influences.
Now in his 84th year, the legendary performer made the song Sodade famous—later immortalised by Cesária Évora. Once an avid advocate for Angolan independence, Bonga has created vibrant, uplifting music infused with samba, driven by storytelling and a deep longing for harmony. A playful, raspy voice, an ever-smiling and endearing presence, and the gentle melancholy of longing - this is the unmistakable “Bonga formula”—guaranteed to lift everyone’s spirits.
