A spanyol polgárháború után politikai okok miatt északra költözik Augustin doktor és családja. Lánya, a tízéves Estrella egyre több titkot tud meg az apjáról, aki például varázsvesszővel tud vizet találni, és akiről kiderül, hogy az apjával azért nem beszél, mert ellenkező oldalon álltakak a polgárháború idején. Később Estrella azt is észreveszi, hogy édesapja a moziban mindeg egy Irene Rios (Aurore Clément) nevű színésznő filmjeit nézi.
