The titles of Hermann Hesse's books have already proved a source for names for musical ensembles: this is where the American band Steppenwolf found theirs in the 1960s. This time the name familiar from one of Hesse's novels that we see on the concert poster is from quite a different world: instead of wild rock music, it is the refined playing of four string instruments.
This ensemble of four young German musicians made its début a few years ago at Munich's Prinzregententheater. The teachers who shaped their formative years included Günther Pichler, former first violinist of the Alban Berg Quartet, and the members of Berlin's Artemis Quartet. The Goldmund String Quartet have attended master classes with ensembles like the Hagen, Borodin, Belcea, Ysaÿe and Cherubini quartets and artists like Ferenc Rados, Eberhard Feltz and Alfred Brendel. They are frequent guests at festivals and have made successful appearances at international competitions, including the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and Munich's ARD International Music Competition.
Now, as part of the highly prestigious Rising Stars project run by the European Concert Hall Organisation, they are touring ECHO's venues to show their skills. They have set a high bar with their programme, since the works by Haydn and Mendelssohn that they will be playing at their concert demand great stylistic confidence, a refined sense of acoustic balance and richly detailed elaborations. the composer of the new work receiving its Hungarian première is Dobrinka Tabakova. Born in Bulgaria in 1980 and now based in the UK, she writes works whose unusually - for contemporary music - emotionally rich, evocative and visionary expressive style rely on musicians of exceptional sensitivity to perform them.

Nominated for the Rising Stars programme by: Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Cité de la musique - Philharmonie de Paris
